Ethical Society of Philadelphia,1906 Rittenhouse Sq, Philadelphia, PA, 19103-5735
Tad Daley will argue that if our country decides that we're going to base our national security on "nuclear deterrence" for decades to come, then we must resign ourselves to the reality that others will make the same choice too. Then today's world of 9 nuclear-armed nations will head toward a world of 19 or 29 such nations. And then it will then be only a matter of time before we witness the unfolding of nuclear cataclysm. Most importantly, he will directly tackle the ethical nature of basing our national security on a strategy that carries within it the possibility, however remote at any particular moment, of bringing about our own extinction by our own hands.

Defusing the Nuclear Threat
Stanford University
As part of the effort to create pockets of nuclear awareness in the Stanford area, Stanford University is sponsoring a lecture series on "defusing the nuclear threat." Dr. Daley's presentation as part of this series will take place on Thursday, May 27th and is free of charge and open to the public.
The nuclear threat has many forms: nuclear terror, a nuclear accident, an international crisis escalating out of control. This enormous danger has led many world leaders, including President Obama and over two-thirds of living former Secretaries of Defense and State, to call for ridding the world of nuclear weapons. But is this an achievable goal or a utopian fantasy? This talk explains why the abolition of nuclear weapons is both essential and achievable, and lays out in detail what we need to do to make it a reality.
